Moonpie – Ebony Concert

Named “Moonpie” by it’s owner, this concert ukulele features a Pale Moon Ebony body with custom inlaid details. Although not a common soundboard wood, this black & white ebony top gives a rich, resonate tone. Gabon Ebony rosette, headstock overlay, bindings, bridge, & fretboard add visual contrast to this unique instrument.

This was a fun project. Betty wanted a unique ukulele that would honor her family memories. We collaborated on a design with a dragonfly as a central element – simple details that would balance with the striking natural beauty of the Pale Moon Ebony. Dragonflies are Koa and Maple, adding subtle color elements.

Lani – Koa Concert

This concert ukulele is made of beautiful Koa from Kauai. Butterflies made of Yellowheart and Rosewood grace the Ebony headstock, and fretboard and one flies across the back. The simple rosette is Yellowheart with fineline purfling.

Carib – the Other Island Paradise

I made this concert ukulele because I wanted to try out a finish technique utilizing milkpaint, a traditional casein paint, and to see what a “doghair” finish would look like. The design was painted on the body and then, after drying, most of the paint was scraped off. What’s left is just the paint that filled the pores of the wood, in this case, 100 year old sinker mahogany. The top is curly redwood. These woods combine to give a beautiful rich sound from a vintage-look ukulele.
